How pond leak diagnosis works
- Compare water loss with the pump running and stopped where appropriate.
- Inspect waterfall and stream edges for wet soil or water escaping behind rockwork.
- Check visible plumbing, fittings and filter connections.
- Look for settled liner edges that allow water to leave the pond.
- Evaluate the liner only after easier external causes have been considered.
Evaporation vs. a leak
North Alabama heat can produce noticeable evaporation, especially from shallow waterfalls and fountains. Fast or persistent loss beyond normal evaporation deserves investigation rather than continual topping off.
What to record before a pond leak inspection
Note how much water is being added and how quickly the level drops. Photos of the normal waterline and the point where loss slows or stops can make diagnosis easier.
Keeping a pond water-loss record
Mark the water level at a consistent point and note the date, weather and water added. Photograph visible wet areas and changes around edges. Ask the service provider how they will distinguish the pond basin, waterfall and plumbing before proposing excavation or liner replacement.

Can I locate a leak by letting the pond drain?
Do not let the water fall unchecked, especially where fish or equipment are involved. Discuss a controlled investigation that accounts for the feature’s minimum operating level and care needs. A stopping level is an observation to report, not proof of a particular defect.
