Why Is My Pond Losing Water?

Water loss can come from normal evaporation, splash, a low liner edge, plumbing, a waterfall or an actual liner puncture. The key is to narrow the source before assuming the pond needs a new liner.

What to record when a pond starts losing water

  • Did the loss begin suddenly?
  • Does the water drop faster when the pump and waterfall are running?
  • Is soil unusually wet beside the waterfall or stream?
  • Does the water stop dropping at a consistent level?

How waterfalls can contribute to pond water loss

A small shift in rock or liner can direct water outside the stream channel. Because the water then soaks into surrounding soil, the leak may be invisible from above.

When to request leak repair

If the pond needs frequent topping off or the level drops faster than normal evaporation can explain, a systematic leak inspection is the next step.

What to share when arranging pond service

Record when the change began, recent cleaning or repairs, and the equipment make and model if accessible. Take an overall photo and close-ups of visible changes. Explain whether the concern is appearance, water loss or circulation; these can require different investigations.
